Are You Right For The Job: Firefighters
You see firefighters on TV shows battling the blazes and saving lives, and while that may seem appealing, it is nothing compared to actually working in the field as a firefighter. Do you know if you have what it takes to fight fires and save lives? The following questions might help you find out!
Are You A Team Player?
One of the first things you will learn when you go into this field is that you need to be able to work well in groups. It is a team effort to put out fires and save lives. You will have a sense of camaraderie with the other firefighters, spending time at the fire house, doing drills, advancing your education, and of course being in the field together. It becomes more like a family and less like coworkers as you get to know your teammates.
Even if you aren’t one for working in teams, you will essentially be working with friends and family. You will all work together, save together, eat together, spend time together, and tell stories with one another. It goes beyond the field and into the firehouse.
Are You Ready For The Duties Of A Firefighter?
Being a firefighter is not only mentally demanding, but physically demanding as well. Are you willing to regularly work out and keep yourself in top shape in order to perform at your best when in the field? A firefighter’s job is not just when the sirens sound, but continues through your regular day. Eating right, getting enough sleep and exercise, and keeping yourself healthy, and mentally clear are just a few of things necessary to perform at your best. Are you ready to be your absolute best?
Can Your Family Handle Your Firefighter Duties?
Once you have realized you can handle everything that comes with being a firefighter, it is time to see if your family can, too. Are you married? Do you have a significant other? Children? It can be hard on them knowing that someone they love puts his/her life on the line on a regular basis. If your spouse works regular hours and you are on 24-48 hour shifts away from the house, it can also put a strain on the relationship if he/she is not prepared. This is not to say this field is not meant for you, just make sure you and your loved ones are made aware of your duties in this noble field.
There is a lot to consider when getting into this career. It is a fulfilling career and one that will fill you with all sorts of emotions. If you had positive answers to all of these questions, a career in firefighting would likely be a great idea for your future!
